Lab 8: Browser Identification

Part I. Getting Started

• Create a directory called Lab8 and place all the parts of this lab in the directory.

Part II. Detecting Browsers

• Start with the Detecting Browsers example from week 10. It can be found at http://cs.metrostate.edu/~fitzgesu/courses/ics225/fall2006/examples/week10/displayBrowser2.htm

• This script does not properly identify the Firefox browser. Add code to identify and report on the Firefox browser. Hint: See http://www.javascriptkit.com/javatutors/navigator.shtml for one way to do this.

• Be sure your doctype is correctly specified both for validation and to avoid quirky behavior. See http://www.communitymx.com/content/article.cfm?cid=85FEE for information on doctype statements. (A copy of this was handed out in class.)

Part III. Switching Style Sheets

• Start with the Style Sheet Switcher example from week 11. It can be found at http://cs.metrostate.edu/~fitzgesu/courses/ics225/fall2006/examples/week11/switcher.htm . Download the three style sheets, normal.css, inverted.css and serif.css from week 11 and the browser identifier file from week 10 as well.

• Change several more style attributes in the inverted.css or serif.css files and observe the effect on the screen.

• Create an additional style sheet with different rules and add a link to it in switcher.htm

• Change the widget from a select box to radio buttons.
