Critique:            3

Concept:           Privacy

Due:                 Monday, November 9, 2009

Points:              30 points

Analyze the privacy for TWO different commercial sites by:

  1. Go to each site.  Find and read the privacy policy for each.  Compare the two sites based on the following questions:

  • Was the privacy policy easy to find?
  • Easy to understand?
  • Is the information collected at each site shared or sold?
  • Which does the web site have:  an opt-in policy or an opt-out policy?
  • Does the site use cookies?
  • In what ways does the privacy policy at this site match or not match your personal preferences?
  • Would you provide personal data at this site?  Why or why not?

  1. Use the Truwex tool at http://checkwebsite.erigami.com/accessibility.html  to evaluate the way privacy is handled for a particular web page.

·         Enter the URL of a web page.

·         Check the Privacy box.

·         Do NOT check the Accessibility, Web Site Quality, Interactive Behavior or Check Broken Links boxes (uncheck if checked).

  1. For each site, explain what problems Truwex reports.  Although you may include parts of the Truwex report, you will receive no credit unless you explain what the report means.

  1. Compare the two sites based on the report generated by Truwex.  Do the sites have the same problems?  Different problems?  No reported problems with privacy?

  1. How do you benefit from giving up some of your privacy?

  1. How are you harmed by loss of privacy?

Use boldface subtitles to separate the sections of your report.

Print and hand in a typed, single-spaced report which is approximately three full pages in length (using 12 pt Times New Roman font or 10 pt Arial font), with a minimum of 1700 words.  The report must include the URL’s of the websites you are critiquing.   Your report should be written using a word processor. Make sure your work is original and individual.

I prefer hardcopy, but if necessary you can submit your project report by copying it to the ICS 225 DropFolder on the L: drive.  You must be logged into the Metro State portal in order to access the L: drive.  To avoid confusion, name your report file using this scheme:  Your last name, your first initial, your middle initial, C1.  For example, fitzgeraldscC1.doc.  Send a follow up email to me with the name of the file so I know to look for it.  Acceptable formats are limited to:  Word 2007 (docx), Word 2003 (doc), rtf, pdf, txt or Excel.  If I can’t read it, I can’t grade it.
